Canary Islands: The Top Pick for Nearly Half of Tourists in Late 2024

According to the latest Tourism Expenditure Survey published quarterly by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), 44% of tourists visiting the Canary Islands during the fourth quarter of 2024 did not consider any other destination when planning their trip. Among those who did, the most commonly considered alternatives were other Canary Islands, destinations within mainland Spain, and Greece.

The data reveals that 90.5% of tourists traveled for holidays, leisure, and entertainment, while 2% came for business or professional reasons and 7.5% visited for personal reasons such as family visits, education, or healthcare.

In terms of accommodation, 69.1% of tourists stayed in collective establishments, mainly hotels (53.4%) and apartments (15.7%). The remaining visitors opted for private accommodations, including vacation rentals (18.7%) and stays with family, in their own homes, or other private options (8.4%).

The average length of stay was 8.98 days, with German residents staying the longest (10.48 days), and Spanish mainland tourists the shortest (6.12 days).

All-inclusive packages were chosen by 51% of tourists, with German visitors leading the trend (66%) and Italians being the least likely to choose this option (16%).

Lastly, 73% of tourists had visited the Canary Islands before, and overall satisfaction with the destination remains high, with an average rating of 8.72 out of 10.
