Canary Islands receives 2.97% more tourists in April 2024, reaching 1,397,864 visitors
The Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) has reported that a total of 1,397,864 tourists arrived in the Canary Islands by air in April 2024, representing an increase of 2.97% compared to the same month last year. This positive figure reflects an increase of 40,377 tourists compared to April 2023.
Of the total number of tourists who visited the Canary Islands in April 2024, 1,229,544 were foreign, representing 2.99% more than in the same period last year. Spanish tourists residing in the Peninsula amounted to 168,321, which means an increase of 2.85% in annual rate.
United Kingdom, the main issuing market
Tourists from the United Kingdom represented the highest number of entries, with 493,426 visitors, which is equivalent to 35.3% of the total number of tourists. German tourists occupied the second place with 251,513 visitors (18% of the total), followed by residents in the rest of Spain with 168,321 visitors (12% of the total).
Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the most visited islands
Regarding the distribution by islands, Tenerife received the highest number of tourists, both foreign and residents in the Peninsula, with a total of 578,602 visitors. Gran Canaria occupied the second place with 352,423 tourists.
A key sector for the Canarian economy
Tourism is a key sector for the Canarian economy, and these positive figures are an indicator of the sector’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canarian authorities expect the positive trend to continue in the coming months.
