Increase in the number of holiday homes in the Canary Islands in May 2024 compared to May 2023

The Canary Islands registered 9.1% more holiday homes in the last year, with Tenerife leading the way.

In May of this year there were 44,613 holiday homes available in the Canary Islands, which represents a growth of 9.1 percent over the last year. This is one of the data that can be consulted in the Experimental Holiday Dwelling Statistics presented by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC).

This statistical operation, which is being published for the first time, is included in the Collective Tourist Accommodation Survey. In order to obtain the information, a massive analysis of the data offered by the digital platforms where the dwellings are advertised has been carried out. To do so, a big data technique called scraping was used. This process provides a large volume of constantly updated information.

Most of this type of housing is on the island of Tenerife, which accounts for 41 percent. In Gran Canaria, 21.4 percent of these dwellings are located. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura account for 17.1 per cent and 13.6 per cent, respectively, of this housing stock.

In total, there are more than 190,000 accommodation places available in holiday homes. This is 7.3 percent more than in May 2023.

During the month of May, 38,913 properties were booked. This register is also experiencing a continuous rise. In the last year it has increased by 11 percent, according to the data provided by the ISTAC.

Accommodation supply

The objective of this experimental statistical operation is to offer monthly indicators of the capacity, occupancy and profitability of holiday dwellings, among other data of interest to the sector.

As this data is similar to that obtained with the traditional surveys of hotel and non-hotel accommodation, it allows for comparison between both types of accommodation. This contributes to having a more complete vision of the tourist accommodation offer in the Canary Islands.

For this study, data is published on holiday dwellings that provide accommodation services in the Canary Islands and that are offered on digital intermediation platforms. This type of accommodation is included in code 55.2 of the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) 2009.
