INE publishes the Tourist Expenditure Survey

Total expenditure by international tourists visiting Spain in July rose by 11.9% to 15,535 million euros.
Average daily expenditure increased by 2.1% to 195 euros.

During the first seven months of 2024, total expenditure by international tourists increased by 18.6% to 71,108 million euros.

Sending countries

The main sending countries in terms of the level of expenditure in July were the United Kingdom (with 18.3% of the total), Germany (10.8%) and France (9.6%).

Spending by UK-based tourists increased by 10.3% year-on-year, Germany by 16.7% and France by 1.5%.

In the first seven months of 2024, the UK was the country with the highest cumulative expenditure (17.9% of the total). It was followed by Germany (12.2%) and France (8.0%).

Expenditure items

Expenditure on accommodation was the main item in July, with 20.0% of total expenditure and an increase of 11.0% compared to the same month in 2023.

The following items were expenditure on international transport (not included in package tours) and on activities, with 18.6% and 18.3% of the total, respectively. The former increased by 5.0% and the latter by 9.7%.

Type of accommodation, form of organisation and reason for the trip

62.6% of total expenditure in July was made by tourists staying overnight in hotel accommodation, with an annual increase of 5.6%. Spending in non-market accommodation grew by 20.7%.

Spending by tourists who did not travel with a package tour rose by 10.4% in annual terms. Spending by package tourists increased by 16.4%.

With regard to the reason for the trip, tourists who visited Spain for leisure purposes generated 91.0% of total expenditure, with a 12.0% higher expenditure than in July 2023.

Main destination Autonomous Communities

The Autonomous Communities of main destination with the greatest weight in tourist expenditure in July were Illes Balears (with 24.4% of the total), Catalonia (20.1%) and Comunitat Valenciana (13.3%). Tourist expenditure increased by 16.2% in annual rate in Illes Balears, by 2.1% in Catalonia and by 20.1% in Comunitat Valenciana.

In the first seven months of 2024, the regions with the highest cumulative expenditure were Catalonia (with 18.9% of the total), the Canary Islands (18.3%) and the Balearic Islands (15.6%).
