Spain consolidates its tourism leadership in 2024: more visitors and higher spending

Spain received 82.9 million international tourists between January and October 2024, 10.8% more than in the same period in 2023. These visitors generated a total expenditure of 110,984 million euros, representing an increase of 16.8%.

Among the main issuers were the United Kingdom (16.5 million tourists, +7.1%), France (11.5 million, +11.1%) and Germany (10.7 million, +8.7%). Catalonia led as the main destination with 17.6 million tourists (+9.9%), followed by the Balearic Islands (14.9 million, +6.2%) and the Canary Islands (12.3 million, +9.7%).

In October, Spain received 9 million tourists (+9.5%), with the United Kingdom leading the way (1.8 million, +4.8%), followed by Germany (1.3 million, +14%) and France (1.2 million, +16.7%). Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Andalusia accounted for most of the visits.

Tourism expenditure continues to rise, reaching 11,898 million euros in October (+15.5% compared to 2023). The average expenditure per tourist rose to 1,327 euros (+5.5%), while the average daily expenditure reached 191 euros (+2.9%). The United Kingdom, Germany and France were the countries with the highest economic contribution, with annual increases of 23.5% for German tourists and 16.3% for French tourists.

By type of expenditure, international transport led with 20.8% of the total (+16.7%), followed by activities (19.4%, +11.3%) and package tours (18.3%, +17.2%). In addition, there was a significant increase in rented housing (+40%) and stays of more than 15 nights (+5.7%).

With these results, Spain consolidates its position as a leading destination, highlighting the sustained growth in both the number of tourists and their economic contribution.
