March 26, 2024 – The National Statistics Institute (INE) has published the data from the Residents’ Tourism Survey (ETR) for the fourth quarter of 2023. The results show a 10.0% increase in the number of trips made by Spanish residents, with a total of 41.7 million trips.
Total spending also experienced significant growth, of 18.7%, reaching 12.542 billion euros. Leisure, recreation, and vacation trips increased the most, by 12.1%, followed by business and other professional travel (13.7%).
Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community were the main destinations, with 16.3%, 12.2%, and 8.7% of total trips, respectively. In terms of origin, residents in Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Community of Madrid made the most trips.
The data for the whole of 2023 is also positive, with an 8.5% increase in the number of trips and a 16.8% increase in total spending. 89.6% of trips had Spain as their main destination, while 10.4% were made abroad.
In summary, the ETR for the fourth quarter of 2023 shows a recovery of the tourism sector in Spain. The increase in the number of trips and spending is a positive sign for the Spanish economy.
Some additional data from the ETR:
- The average daily expenditure was 89 euros, 72 euros for domestic trips and 144 euros for international trips.
- The highest average daily expenditures were recorded in the Balearic Islands (106 euros), the Community of Madrid (99 euros), and the Basque Country (92 euros).
- December had the highest number of trips (15.6 million) and the longest average duration (3.6 nights).
- The population aged 15 and over made 48.0 million excursions in the fourth quarter, with an annual decrease of 1.9%.
