Spending by tourists visiting the Canary Islands increases in the second quarter 2024

Tourists who visited the Canary Islands during the second quarter of 2024 spent 4,170 million euros. This figure is 11.45% more than in the same period of the previous year, according to the Tourist Expenditure Survey carried out by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC).

The average expenditure per tourist was 1257.17 euros, with an annual increase of 3.47%. The average daily expenditure per tourist was 162.9 euros. This figure is higher than in the second quarter of 2023 (155.44 euros).

The main countries of origin in terms of the level of expenditure were the United Kingdom (with 41.1% of the total), Germany (16.4%) and the rest of Spain (7.8%). From the perspective of the destination, Tenerife led the tourist expenditure with 41.4% of the total in the Canary Islands, followed by Gran Canaria (24.4%), Lanzarote (18.9%), Fuerteventura (14%) and La Palma (0.8%).

Expenditure on accommodation was the main item of expenditure, with 43.2% of total expenditure and an annual increase of 11.3%. The following items were expenditure on international/national transport and food, with 27.6% and 15.5% of the total, respectively. Both items with an annual increase of 17.3%.

Micro-markets

From Germany, the North Rhine-Westphalia region accounted for the largest amount of spending with 17.9% of total spending in Germany. From the UK, the region that contributed the most to spending was the South East of England with 17.7% of total UK spending.
