International tourism drives growth, while domestic travel sees a slight decline

In February 2025, the Canary Islands recorded the arrival of 1.63 million tourists, according to the latest data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), through the Tourist Movement at Borders Survey. This figure represents a 2% increase compared to the same month in 2024, which means 33,102 more tourists.

The growth is mainly driven by international tourism, which accounted for 90% of all arrivals and saw an increase of 2.67%. On the other hand, the number of tourists residing in Spain decreased by 4.56%.

The United Kingdom remains the most important source market, accounting for 31% of all tourists (506,474 people). Germany and residents from the rest of Spain followed, contributing 16.5% and 7.7% of total arrivals, respectively.

By island, Tenerife was the most visited destination with 648,255 tourists, representing 4 out of every 10 visitors. It was followed by Gran Canaria (27.5%), Lanzarote (17.2%), and Fuerteventura (14.2%).

The report also highlights that 70.6% of tourists stayed on the islands for between 1 and 7 nights, while only 2% stayed for more than 31 days. The main reason for traveling to the Canary Islands continued to be leisure and holidays.

Nearly half of the tourists (49.1%) arrived with a package holiday, meaning they booked at least transport and accommodation together as a single service. As for accommodation types, hotels and apartments remained the most popular, hosting 79% of all tourists in February.
