EU tourism enterprises employ 11.3 million people
Nearly one in ten companies in the EU belongs to the tourism sector, according to Eurostat. These companies, totaling 2.4 million, employ 11.3 million people, representing 8.6% of all employees in the non-financial business economy and 20.5% of the services sector.
Despite its importance in terms of employment, tourism’s contribution to net turnover and value added is lower. Tourist industries account for 2.5% of the net turnover and 4.2% of the value added of the non-financial business economy.
Why these figures?
The statistics likely reflect the high presence of micro-enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the tourism sector, as well as the high level of part-time employment.
