Island destinations like Greece and Cyprus tend to attract longer stays due to travel costs and distance. In contrast, countries like Belgium or Luxembourg, which are close to their main visitor sources, typically receive shorter trips.<\/p><h6>How Do Europeans Travel Within the EU?<\/h6><p>The most commonly used mode of transport for intra-EU travel was the car, accounting for <strong>45%<\/strong> of trips. Air travel followed with <strong>40%<\/strong>, being the dominant mode for destinations such as Spain (77%), Greece (85%), and Malta (99%).<\/p><p>Other means of transport were less significant:<\/p><ul><li>Train: 6% (important in Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany).<\/li><li>Bus: 5% (notable in Lithuania and Latvia).<\/li><li>Waterways: 3% (key in Estonia, Finland, and Sweden).<\/li><\/ul><h6>Where Do European Tourists Stay?<\/h6><p><strong>72% of overnight stays<\/strong> within the EU were in rented accommodations:<\/p><ul><li>Hotels: 40%.<\/li><li>Apartments or villas: 22%.<\/li><li>Campgrounds and caravans: 7%.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Non-rented accommodations<\/strong> also played a significant role, with <strong>17% of tourists staying with family or friends<\/strong>, and <strong>7% in second homes<\/strong>.<\/p><h6>Average Travel Spending Within the EU<\/h6><p>The average spending per trip to another EU country was <strong>\u20ac824<\/strong>, with variations by destination:<\/p><ul><li>Greece and Cyprus: over <strong>\u20ac1,200<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Spain and Ireland: over <strong>\u20ac1,000<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Slovakia: <strong>\u20ac314<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p>Per night, the average spending was <strong>\u20ac119<\/strong>, with Malta and Iceland standing out at over <strong>\u20ac150 per night<\/strong>.<\/p><h6>Seasonality of Travel<\/h6><p>Summer remains the peak travel season within the EU. In destinations like <strong>Croatia<\/strong>, nearly half of all tourist trips (44.3%) occurred in <strong>July and August<\/strong>.
